Reg Quest v1 is now live on iOS. If you’ve ever sat in traffic trying to spot every number from 1 to 999 on a number plate, this one’s for you.

What is Reg Quest?

Reg Quest takes the classic British number plate spotting game and turns it into a proper app that tracks your progress, keeps your streaks honest, and lets you pick it back up wherever you left off, whether that’s the school run or a six-hour motorway slog.

A quick word on where this game comes from

Spotting numbers in sequence on number plates is a road-trip tradition that goes back generations in the UK, but it was the comedian Richard Herring who gave it a proper name and a set of rules worth following: Consecutive Number Plate Spotting (CNPS). Herring’s rules require spotting every number from 1 to 999 in strict order, using only the numbers on UK number plates attached to an actual vehicle, with no skipping ahead and no counting numbers out of sequence. He also set up an honour system around it: players are expected to spot fairly, track their progress honestly, and never fudge their score.

Reg Quest is our digital homage to that same spirit: a long, slow, slightly obsessive game that rewards patience and a sharp eye, played entirely on the honour system (just with a nicer interface than a scrap of paper on the dashboard).

The rules, in short

  • Start at 1, and work your way up in strict numerical order.
  • You’re looking for the exact number on the plate. A “23” doesn’t count as a “2” or a “3,” and you can’t bank numbers out of order.
  • Only numbers attached to a genuine number plate count. No plates on the ground, no photos sent in after the fact.
  • Progress to the next number only once you’ve genuinely spotted the current one.

It sounds simple. It is simple. That’s the appeal.

What’s in v1

This first release covers the core game as it stands today: spot, log, and climb through your sequence at your own pace. Voice support is in the works but isn’t part of this release; for now, it’s all hands-on, eyes-on spotting.

We want your feedback

This is v1, not the finished article, and we’d genuinely love to hear what you think. Found a bug? Got an idea for a feature? Think a rule needs tightening up (or loosening)? You can send feedback directly through the app. It’s free on both iOS, so there’s no excuse not to have a go and tell us what’s working and what isn’t.

Download it, give it a try, and let us know how you get on.
